Types of Polyester Yarns

Polyester is one of the most popular varieties of chemical fibers in textile industry. It is a fiber-forming polymer produced by the reaction of terephthalic acid (PTA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with ethylene glycol (EG). This polymer is made into fibers through esterification or transesterification and polycondensation. It has a wide range of applications in garments and fabrics making including apparel, home furnishings, industrial and automotive fabric and simulated silk. Polyester yarns are usually classified as undrawn yarns (UDY), semi-pre-oriented yarn (POY) or drawn textured yarn (DTY). The former two are also referred to as filament, while the latter is called fully drawn textured yarn.

Polyester POY is the most common type of polyester yarn. This yarn is a wound yarn with a high degree of orientation and moderate crystallinity. It can be made into a variety of lusters, such as Semi Dull POY or Bright POY depending on the cross-sections of the polyester fibers.

It is widely used as the warp and weft material in making fabrics. It has high strength and can be woven or knitted to produce a wide variety of fabrics. It is also a raw material for yarns such as PSF that can be twisted to make Polyester Embroidery Thread that is widely used in sewing.

Drawn Textured Yarn (DTY) is the yarn which is obtained when Polyester POY is simultaneously twisted and drawn. It has a good flexibility and can be dyed in different colors by dope dyeing technology or conventional dyeing. It is packed in paper bobbins for easy storage and transporting.

This yarn is a highly versatile and durable product which can be made into a variety of lustres such as Semi Dull, Trilobal Bright or even Optical Bright, depending on the type of sections of polyester fibers. It is widely used in weaving and knitting for manufacturing various types of garments, home furnishings, seat covers and bags. It can also be used for twill fabric, wool-like fabric and other fabric applications.

It is also used to manufacture sateen fabrics and women'swear fabric to eliminate physical post weaving processes to achieve peach skin effect. It has a soft crimp and excellent bulk properties. This is achieved by texturizing the partially oriented yarns through a special process.
